Date Nights Don't Have to Be Expensive (Our 12 Favorite Free Dates)

Babysitters cost $60. Dinner costs $80. By the time you're at the restaurant, you're too stressed about the bill to enjoy it. Here are 12 dates that cost nothing.

Let me be honest: we stopped going on date nights for about a year. Not because we didn't want to โ€” because we couldn't afford it.

Between the babysitter, dinner, and maybe a movie, we were looking at $150+ per date. With two kids under five and one income, that math just didn't work.

But here's what we learned: the best dates we've ever had cost absolutely nothing.

Our 12 Favorite Free Dates

At Home (After Kids Are in Bed) 1. **Living room picnic.** Blanket on the floor. Whatever's in the fridge. Candles. Phone in another room. It sounds cheesy. It is cheesy. It also works. 2. **Question jar night.** We wrote 50 questions on slips of paper โ€” some funny, some deep. Pull three each. No wrong answers. 3. **Cook-off challenge.** Each person gets 30 minutes and whatever's in the pantry. Judgment is brutal. Laughter is guaranteed. 4. **Playlist swap.** Each person makes a 30-minute playlist for the other. Listen together. Explain your choices.

Outside the House 5. **Sunrise walk.** Set the alarm stupid early. Walk somewhere with a view. Watch the sun come up. Go back to bed. 6. **Free museum nights.** Most cities have them. Google it. You'll be surprised. 7. **Bookstore browsing.** Each person has 20 minutes to find a book they think the other would love. Share your picks over coffee (from home, in a thermos). 8. **Park bench people-watching.** Bring snacks. Make up stories about strangers. This is funnier than it sounds.

Active Dates 9. **Bike ride with no destination.** Just ride. Turn when you feel like it. Get lost on purpose. 10. **Workout together.** YouTube has a million free couples workouts. Some are terrible. That's part of the fun. 11. **Volunteer together.** Food bank, park cleanup, whatever. Doing good together feels different than doing good alone. 12. **Stargazing.** Download a free star map app. Blanket in the backyard. Look up.

The Point

Date night isn't about the restaurant. It's about the intention. It's saying: for the next two hours, you are the only person in the world to me.

You don't need money for that. You just need to show up.
